Dear Friends,
I want to thank you for remaining loyal to me this year while I’ve been otherwise involved in wrangling with a new book and my posts have been slow to appear on this site. Since I’ve really not been earning your money, I’ve paused payments for my paid subscribers until the end of April. They will resume at that time when I’ll be offering more good stuff.
Like many of you, I’ve struggled to tailor my writing to respond to the new reality we now find ourselves living in—a world exploding in confusion and horror, caused by the installation of a dangerous president, the hand-wringing of a political party who seems to be unable to get back on its feet, the ongoing war against women involving the removal of rights we’ve held for most of my life, the continued exploitation of the planet, and horrific global warfare. Some days, it feels impossible just to cope with the onslaught of change brought about by human beings. But, being the screamer, the activist that I am, I must write.
My new book, Storying Silence: A Guide to Unsilencing, Reclaiming Autonomy, and Restoring Sovereignty, is my response, is a call to other writers—especially women and those who love us—to gather in community and write our stories. Here is the opening page, on which I address the women I hope will be my readers.
A Note Before You Begin
Dear Reader,
As I write to you I ‘m watching the world explode in chaos following a ruling by the Supreme Court that took away women’s rights to bodily autonomy and the installation of a president who, as a sexual predator, is a threat to the safety of all. Numb and helpless don’t begin to describe how many of us feel, but this is not a time to allow ourselves to sit alone in our anger and frustration. We need to respond by creating our own movement to take back control of our lives by re-writing women’s stories. The future is our story to tell, as well as that of our daughters and granddaughters. Relinquishing narrative control is not an option for us at this time if we are going to resist efforts to define and control us.
Historically, we have been the object of stories written about us, labeling us as malevolent, or worse and, even when men have written tales glorifying us, they have cast us as victims, or traditional, voiceless beings. Their stories have objectified us, raising us up on pedestals where we can be easily knocked down.
This workbook is a call -to-arms to re-write stories in our own voices. It is a roaring call to all women to gather in circles to create a collection of tales that represent us as a community. It is a call to create an oeuvre of works that subvert the tales told about us by others. A call to gather, write and resist.
I’m sharing this excerpt with you, friends, in hopes that you’ll join me in birthing this movement to bring women back to the table where we can write herstory. My book will be published in the summer of 2025.
Thank you, Jane
